mark sanford gross, local writer, writing coach, and creator of KGUA Writers in Gualala hosts "Why Is Ulysses More Important Than Ever Even if We Can't Understand It?" on Friday, June 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the library.

In a casual non-intimidating gathering Mark will lead an open discussion on Ulysses by James Joyce on this 100th anniversary of its publication. Regarded by many scholars as the most difficult book of the century to read while also being the masterpiece of the century, Ulysses has daunted many. Recently, Mark has dived slowly into the book absorbing it through audios, discussions, meeting with scholars and devoted fans, and constantly jumping down rabbit holes. This newfound passion of Ulysses drives him to share what he is experiencing while learning just how to experience it. Even if you don't want to read Ulysses, the story of how this banned book, written in long hand came to be the masterpiece of the century is its own story. One scholar said, "What makes a masterpiece is its relevance at any age and at any point in time." Themes and passages, even sentences found in Ulysses will startle you with their relevancy to our current day and familiarity.
