Mendocino County Library has joined with the 1,000 Books Foundation in offering this free program to our patrons which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she starts kindergarten.

Program Overview

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten.

How to Participate

  1. Register for the program at any of our Mendocino County Library branches or register online at https://mendolibrary.beanstack.org.
  2. Read aloud together - preferably every day.  Books read at Storytime, daycare, or by others count too!
  3. Keep a reading log given to you at the library or download one in English English Reading Logs or Spanish Registro de lectura en español. 
  4. Tell your librarian when your child has reached a milestone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in this program? Any child from birth until they enter kindergarten can participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

How long will the program take? It can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together.

How many children can participate? All of them (provided they have not yet started kindergarten). Make it even more fun and read as a family!!
