Ukiah Children’s Library Playaway Launchpad Guidelines

Eligibility

• Mendocino County Library cardholders between the ages of 3-12 may borrow a Playaway Launchpad.
• If the youth in question does not have their own library card, a parent or guardian with a Mendocino County Library card may checkout the Playaway Launchpad on their behalf.
• The borrower’s Parent or guardian must be over the age of 18, and must read and sign this policy document prior to checkout.
• Borrowers may checkout a Playaway Launchpad only if they have less than $20 in library fines.

 Loan Period and Availability

• Borrowers may check out a Playaway Launchpad from the Customer Service Desk for three weeks (21 days) at a time.
• Playaway Launchpads are available on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved.
• Borrowers must return Playaway Launchpads directly to the Customer Service Desk, and are not to return them through the book drop.
• Individual borrowers may checkout only one Playaway Launchpad at a time. Limit one per household.

Late Fees and Liability

The borrower’s parent/guardian is financially liable for any lost, stolen or damaged Playaway Launchpads. Fines and fees for tablets will be processed the same as fines or fees for other library materials.

Description  --->  Replacement Fines/Fees

1. Lost or damaged power cord or other accessories --->  Replacement cost will range from $8-$13, depending on the lost/damaged item.
2. Damaged Playaway Launchpad --->  Cost of the repair up to cost of replacement.
3. Lost or stolen Playaway Launchpad.  If stolen, the parent/guardian is responsible for submitting a police report to the Library Director  --->  Replacement cost of item.

Limitations for Use of Playaway Launchpad

• Note that Playaway Launchpads do not connect to WiFi, and are intended to provide access to pre-downloaded educational games only.
• All borrowers have automatic access to the Playaway Launchpad’s downloaded content.
• The borrower must not leave the Playaway Launchpad unattended. Replacement costs for lost or stolen Playaway Launchpads are the responsibility of the borrower’s parent/guardian.
• The library staff reserves the right to terminate a person’s use of the library’s Playaway Launchpads if the borrower is known to have caused problems such as disruptive behavior, abuse of equipment, or habitually turning equipment in late. Any damage to library equipment will be assessed on an individual basis by the Branch Librarian.
• The borrower does not have privacy rights and any content saved on the device will be erased upon return to the library.
• The Library assumes no responsibility for any damage to the borrower's personal devices, software, files, and/or equipment. Tampering with Library equipment or attempting to access or modify the operating system or any other software or programming is prohibited.
• The Playaway Launchpads may not be used to engage in illegal activities or to disturb other patrons inside the library. If asked to refrain from such behaviors, the cardholder must comply immediately. Failure to comply may result in loss of Playaway Launchpad privileges.
